My Cat Has worms. How can I keep the worms from getting everywhere?

I just found a small white worm coming out of my cat’s anus. A little while later, I found another. I made an appointment with the vet, but I can’t get her an appointment until tomorrow afternoon. I’m worried that worms are going to get on my bed (where my cat sleeps), as well as wherever else she might go. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from getting all over the place?

If what you are seeing look like flat pieces of rice, you are seeing tapeworm segments. This is not the full worm and it is not capable of spreading infection with tapeworms directly to other pets or to you. Tapeworm eggs must be ingested by another host–fleas and crickets most commonly–and then those hosts have to be ingested in order for the tapeworm to continue it’s life cycle. So, just clean he segments/egg packets (what falls off of a tapeworm to pass out of the body to continue the life cycle) up as you see them and put them in the trash or toilet.

If what you are seeing doesn’t look like a flat piece of rice, then you need to worry more about the eggs being shed in the feces than the worm you are seeing. The adult worms aren’t infectious. It’s the eggs that are passed loose in the feces that can lead to infections in other species or other cats. If this is the case then you need to be picking up and disposing of feces (without having skin contacg) out of the yard/house daily and wash your hands well after doing so. You may also want to confine your cat away from you bed until you can see the vet, but the risk of exposure in areas where feces aren’t shed is pretty low.
