Who has a story about how a pet helped them recover from an Illness?

I am doing a presentation on how animals help people to recover from illnesses. It can be a story about having an animal visit them in hospitals or how a pet at home gives you the drive to make it through the day. Any animal stories on how they make you feel better would be appreciated! Thank you!

I can tell you my story.

About 4 – 4 1/2 years ago, I became housebound with agoraphobia. I already deal with bipolar disorder, but having the agoraphobia added on to this made this extremely difficult. When I was at my worst – suicidal – the pets I have (1 dog, two cats) – were what kept me going. They seem(ed) to know instinctively when I was/am down.

Anyways – to get me out – I needed to take care of the dog. She needed to be walked and cared for. The cats – and one in particular (Cleo) was a ‘mama’ cat. She was pretty special. She would literally hunt me down when I was in the house and give me lovings. Sounds extermely sappy, I know, but it’s true. There were times where I would retreat to the spare bedroom because I had had enough of the world, and she would cry at the door to be let in. Once in, she would snuggle, pedal, and purr – eventually, she would break through my “I don’t want anything to do with the world barrier” and I would come back out and make another go of it. You see, while I would not consider suicide by an active method at that time, I was considering suicide by emotionally withdrawing and by physically refusing to partake of anything.

It’s hard to explain, but the pets were the make and break of my situation. People were important, but pets were there because they wanted to be there. What they felt and what they gave was unconditional. They didn’t have words to give or say – just their affection and their love. I didn’t need words, didn’t want explanations, didn’t need placation – just the love and affection of the pets.
