How can I stop my old cat’s territorial behavior?

I just adopted a 3 month old kitten to join my 8 month old cat. We’ve progressed from initially separating the cat entirely, to now letting them live in the same room for the entire day. What we’ve noticed is the old cat would attack the new cat whenever he gets out of his hiding place, which is behind the TV set. As long as our new cat stays there, the old cat leaves him alone. How long is this behavior going to persist? Is there anything we can do to make the Older Cat willing to share his space?

Sorry to hear that you are having problems. It is always possible that two cats will never get along, get along some of the time or become fast friends. Are they the same gender? Sometimes that makes it more difficult.

Speed helps in introducing cats. The slower the better. Sometimes it can take a month of the new cat living in a closed off room before the resident cat accepts the newcomer. You may want to put the kitten into a bathroom with litterbox, food and water widely separated.

The resident cat should come by to take a look, get used to the scent and eventually accept the cat.

Alternatively, many social problems can be reduced by giving the cats more vertical space. If you have tall cat trees, shelving (staggered floating shelves work if they are wide enough) or anything else that can provide more space above, that can help the cats develop a better hierarchy and sharing arrangement without the attacking.

You might also try ignoring the kitten in favor of the older cat until the older cat calms down. If the older cat attacks the kitten in the litter box, you could end up with litter box problems so you want to stop that behavior asap.

You can also try the Feliway plug in to calm them both and use toys to provide exercise and reduce stress.
